Specialist Options

At St Mary’s Catholic School, we believe every child is wonderfully unique, with their own interests, talents, and ways of learning. That’s why we offer a diverse range of specialist subjects designed to nurture and showcase each student’s individual strengths. Through these opportunities, children are encouraged to explore their passions, develop new skills, and grow in confidence as learners. Our current specialist offerings include a variety of engaging subjects that support creativity, curiosity, and holistic development across all year levels. We currently offer The Arts (Music, Visual Art & Drama), Technology (Design & Digital), Languages (AUSLAN), Sport & Science to give students a broad range of learning opportunities and experiences.

The Arts

At St Mary’s Catholic School, The Arts are a vibrant part of our curriculum, offered across both semesters with a rotating selection of experiences to inspire creativity and self-expression. In Visual Arts, students explore a wide range of mediums—from painting and drawing to creating intricate mosaic pieces—allowing them to discover and showcase their artistic talents. Many of these artworks are proudly displayed each year at the Dinninup Show, where they are admired by the wider community.

Music remains a firm favourite among students, especially with the exciting addition of new instruments generously donated by The Grassroots Music Foundation. With access to guitars, ukuleles, and even an electric drum kit, students have the opportunity to experiment, perform, and grow their musical abilities in a fun and supportive environment.

Technology

At St Mary’s Catholic School, our Digital and Design Technology program offers students exciting, hands-on learning experiences that alternate each semester, giving them the chance to explore both the creative and technical sides of modern innovation. In Design Technology, students dive into the design process—learning how to plan, create, and refine products using a variety of tools and materials. Whether it’s building prototypes or solving real-world problems through design thinking, students are encouraged to be inventive and resourceful. In Digital Technology, the focus shifts to the digital world, where students learn essential skills for the future, including coding, digital literacy, and safe online practices. One of the highlights is using Minecraft Education to learn coding in a fun and interactive way, alongside opportunities to design and produce digital content. With endless possibilities in both areas, our program empowers students to become confident creators and problem-solvers in an ever-evolving technological landscape.

Languages (AUSLAN)

Beginning in Semester 2, 2025, AUSLAN has quickly become a standout subject at St Mary’s Catholic School, capturing the interest and enthusiasm of students across all year levels. Under the expert guidance of our passionate language teacher, Mrs Cailes, students have been immersing themselves in the world of Australian Sign Language—learning not just vocabulary and grammar, but also the deeper value of inclusive communication. AUSLAN lessons are lively, interactive, and meaningful, as students discover how to express themselves and connect with others in new ways. More than just a language subject, AUSLAN is helping our students break down communication barriers and build empathy, making our school a more inclusive and understanding community. It’s a powerful reminder that language can unite us, and that every student has the ability to make a difference through respectful and accessible communication.

Sport

At St Mary’s Catholic School, sport is more than just physical activity—it’s a gateway to discovery, teamwork, and personal growth. Our year-round sports program ensures that every student has the opportunity to get active, try something new, and build confidence in a supportive and inclusive environment. Whether it’s hockey, soccer, football, squash, or a variety of other sports, students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and explore activities they might not otherwise experience. The program is designed to cater to all skill levels, fostering a love of movement and healthy competition. Beyond regular lessons, students also have the chance to represent the school in exciting interschool events such as the Lightning Carnival and the Minkey Hockey Carnival. These events not only promote school spirit and camaraderie but also give students a taste of competitive sport in a fun and encouraging setting. With so many opportunities to participate, learn, and shine, sport at St Mary’s is truly a highlight of the school experience.

Science

Science at St Mary’s Catholic School is an exciting journey of discovery, curiosity, and hands-on learning. Each week, students step into the role of young scientists, exploring fascinating topics and forming hypotheses as they investigate the world around them. Our program covers all four key areas of science—Biological, Chemical, Physical, and Earth & Space—giving students a well-rounded understanding of how science shapes our lives. Through engaging experiments, problem-solving challenges, and collaborative inquiry, students learn how to think critically, test ideas, and record their findings just like real scientists. STEM is brought to life in our classrooms, with activities that spark imagination and encourage innovation. Whether they’re coding, building, experimenting, or analysing results, students gain valuable skills that prepare them for the future while having a whole lot of fun along the way.
